Maryland Offers Help to Federal Workers Affected by Recent Funding Cuts

The State of Maryland recently announced the launch of a website to help federal workers who have been, or may be, affected by recent and potential cuts in federal funding.

The website is https://response.maryland.gov/federalpublicservants/

(The State of Virginia established a website, www.VirginiaHasJobs.com, to help laid-off federal workers, but this article focuses on Maryland.)

Here are some highlights of Maryland’s website:

Unemployment compensation

Unemployment compensation is available to eligible Marylanders who have separated from employment with the federal government, a federal contractor, or a federal grantee.

Eligible Individuals can receive up to $430 in weekly benefits (pre-tax).

Workers should apply for benefits in the jurisdiction of their “duty station.” This means, for example, that if you are a Marylander who is laid off from a federal job based in Virginia, you should apply for benefits in Virginia.

Job search and career support

The state offers a virtual workshop for federal employees or contractors to help you regroup and

redefine your career path, including transitions into the private sector.  To sign up, email FedWorker.Transition@maryland.gov

You can see what the workshop includes at

Legal resources

The site provides links to legal organizations that can facilitate legal consultations to federal workers who have been fired, laid off, or furloughed to explore their legal options.

Federal employment rules and regulations

The site provides links to agencies that are responsible for federal employees’ rights under existing rules and regulations.
